As a UC engineer, you need to do everything you can to ensure that your organization can operate efficiently and without issues. We enjoyed the opportunity to learn how exactly some of the largest enterprises today are handling collaboration performance challenges. We recently held a webinar on overcoming UC performance challenges and what the real cost of downtime meant to organizations, particularly our panelists which comprised of IT professionals from Facebook, Utah Education Network and a leading pharmaceutical organization. While we got the great opportunity to learn many things from our panelists, we’ve outlined our biggest takeaways.
Investing in UC Technology. UC technology used to be “nice to have,” but it’s becoming increasingly clearer that UC technology is now a high priority with a special thanks to the diversity of the workforce and the fact that teams are becoming more global. If employees aren’t given the tools to properly and easily communicate, they can easily go find another opportunity elsewhere, people just don’t have the patience or energy to dedicate to the IT battle. It’s up to the UC/IT team to ensure that they are providing a flawless collaboration environment for the employees of the company. All of our panelists are spending money on the infrastructure and technology to allow teams to communicate and collaborate despite their global locations in order to work at the most efficient productivity levels.
The Real Cost of UC Downtime. Downtime is all dependent upon the person, a top executive with downtime is in the thousands of dollars depending on the length of time. But, one thing most people don’t consider is that now, there’s an element of spend to have the UC or IT investigate that. The quicker the IT team can diagnose the problem, the quicker the IT team can spend doing other important tasks from a proactive standpoint. As our panelist from Facebook put it, “For every issue reported there are 20x that are underreported.” With that knowledge if the IT team could spend more time on proactively ensuring the collaboration experience was adept, than imagine the tickets and the frustration from the non-tickets that exist would start to fade and productivity and efficiency and not to mention, morale are up again. It’s apparent that lost productivity for any team is devastating and it creates this ripple affecting many organizations than just the person who experienced the downtime firsthand.
Time Spent. The value in being able to identify and troubleshoot problematic issues as quickly as possible is invaluable, not only from a productivity standpoint, but from a reactionary standpoint. Our panelists all unanimously voiced that if they had better data, they could react faster and get back to other tasks to keep things moving from a proactive standpoint. Monitoring your UC environments from this standpoint shifts away from the intensity that a reactionary troubleshooting ticket brings and evolves into a place where engineers can focus on the entire organization and ensuring a flawless collaboration environment.
Downtime to a UC/IT professional can be a detrimental factor to how the day is going to go. The efforts that go into reducing downtime and to keep your collaboration environment up and running are a huge undertaking.
